Looking for a relatively short trip to a cool destination, we threw the dogs in the car and drove south to Luxembourg. We had been there something like 15 years ago, and really enjoyed our short time there, and have been wanting to make a return trip, which we finally did. An off the beaten path destination beyond a doubt, but really a trip worth making.

OK, so why Luxembourg? The capital itself, something like 140k population, so not large, is incredible. The main town center is perched on a walled cliff, overlooking the river and houses below, with tunnels (casements) running beneath. From the places I have been, this is truly special. A local castle, some wonderful and historic churches, restaurants, shops, bars...it's all there. The views from the edge are simply fantastic. You can easily spend a couple of days wandering around the city. Did I mention that public transportation in Luxembourg is free?

The countryside, nestled in the historic Ardennes Forest is gorgeous. Rolling tree covered hills and fields throughout, dotted with small towns, some newer others older, and something like 140 castles. In addition, there are quite a number of wineries on the Mossel River border with Germany to stop in and try out. And the seemingly endless hiking and biking trails to take in breathtaking views that cars can simply can not reach. For such a small country, there is so much to see.

A few great options for half or full day trips as well. Trier and its Roman ruins and history is about a 45-minute drive (50 min by train I believe) just across the German border. If you are into World War 2 history, Battle of the Bulge particularly, quite a few sites to go to, including Bastogne just across in Belgium. Metz and a few French towns to the south. Tons to explore. On this trip, only 3 nights, which was far short of what we needed. We will return!
